Biographical notes

Francisco Beltran was a seaman on the Florence D, a blockade runner with a Filipino crew owned by Cadwallader Gibson Lumber Company in Manila. The Florence D had been chartered by the US Army in Java and was able to rescue the crew of a Catalina flying boat shot down by Japanese Zeros on their way to Darwin, early on 19 February 1942. At noon the Florence D was attacked by a Japanese float plane and again at 3pm by nine planes from the aircraft carrier group. It is thought that she was sunk 60 miles north west of Bathurst Island. The wreck was located in 2006 and again in 2008, but the exact location has not been divulged.,
